Port Forwarding
What is Port Forwarding?
Port forwarding or port mapping is a technique - which is widely used to redirect computer signals (ports) between LAN computers (Local network), and remote computers (Internet).
Is port forwarding simple?
If your application supports Universal Plug and Play protocol (UPnP) / NAT-PMP option, then port forwarding is done automatically for you (UPnP is widely used on P2P applications, such as BitTorrent, uTorrent,Vuze, Azureus, BitComet, Transmission, Deluge etc...). If your application does not support UPnP / NAT-PMP option, then you will have to manually configure port forwarding for such applications.
Port forwarding is too hard for me, is there another solution?
If port forwarding is too much of a trouble for you to set, then there is a solution for you as well. You can still make P2P applications, and all other applications work which require ports to be opened. Your just need to purchase Private IP add-on from Members page, and then set your computer (which will run torrent client) to Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on your router.
Astrill is running on computer
Automatic port forwarding (UPnP/NAT-PMP)
1. On your computer, login to Astrill application. Switch to OpenVPN mode, and then connect to VPN server marked with a star.
2. On your router, set your computer (which will run torrent client) to Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
3. On your router, enable UPnP or NAT-PMP option.
4. On your computer, open your torrent client. In torrent client set any port in range from 40,000 to 49,999 (or enable and set port from Members > VPN Services > Port Forward page) and enable UPnP and NAT-PMP options.
5. That's it! You are all set, and now you can start downloading and uploading torrents.
Private IP Scenario
1. On your computer, login to Astrill application. Switch to OpenVPN mode, and then connect to your Private IP (VPN server must be marked with a star in order for BitTorrent to work properly).
2. On your router, set your computer (which will run torrent client) to Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
3. On your router, enable UPnP or NAT-PMP option.
4. On your computer, open your torrent client. In torrent client set any port you want, and enable UPnP and NAT-PMP options.
5. That's it! You are all set, and now you can start downloading and uploading torrents.
Manual port forwarding
1. On your computer, login to Astrill application and switch to OpenVPN mode.
2. In Astrill application, enable Port Forwarding from Settings > Port Forward... menu.
3. In Astrill application, connect to VPN server marked with a star.
4. On your router, set your computer (which will run torrent client) to Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
5. On your router, open port forwarding page. Add a new port forwarding rule, set port number (from Astrill application), and set IP address (from OpenVPN adapter IP address). You can obtain your OpenVPN adapter IP address with ipconfig command (On Mac OS X and Linux the command is ifconfig). The ipconfig or ifconfig command lists all network adapters on your computer.
3. On your computer, open your torrent client. In torrent client set any port you want.
4. On your router, open port forwarding page. Add a new port forwarding rule, set port number (from your torrent client), and set IP address (from OpenVPN adapter IP address). You can obtain your OpenVPN adapter IP address with ipconfig command (On Mac OS X and Linux the command is ifconfig). The ipconfig or ifconfig command lists all network adapters on your computer.
5. That's it! You are all set, and now you can start downloading and uploading torrents.
